Each Hour, Two Winning Teams
Rip City Trivia holds two, back-to-back, 1-hour games each night, with each game earning the top two scoring teams a $15 and $10 gift card, respectively. It is absolutely free to play and teams win on their first night playing all the time! That’s because we keep our format simple and straightforward.
Our show consists of four sections: a 5-minute multiple part question, eight 3-minute general trivia questions, another 5-minute multiple part question, followed by a 5-minute final question where you can wager everything you’ve earned!
Each 5-minute multiple part question has 4 answers, worth 2 points each. These rounds vary in format, but each night, one of them has a visual component. Visual components can be tapped on to enlarge and zoom in on the image, and then tapped again to get back to the answer screen. Teams should enter all 4 of their answers on the answer bar before hitting submit.
From there, we get to the main part of the show. Eight general knowledge trivia questions spanning various topics such as sports, history, music, geography, holidays, words, etc. Teams have 3-minutes to submit their answers and a wager on the app. Teams have 8 wagers to use between 1 and 8 points, but once a wager is used it cannot be used again. The general strategy is to use higher points wagers on answers you are confident in, and lower wagers on questions you aren’t quite sure of. Teams do not lose points for an incorrect answer.
In one of the 8 questions, there will be an additional opportunity to earn a bonus point, called a “Nerd Point.” This will either be a secondary question related to the first, or the main question will have 2 answers and teams can provide both. Teams will provide both answers at the same time. When it is a secondary question, getting the first question wrong does not impact your ability to earn the bonus point. When it is a question with 2 correct answers, if at least one of the answers are correct the team will earn the points they wagered; if both are correct they earn that bonus point.
The final question of the game is a specialized question on a topic, usually more difficult than previous questions.
Example: Emmy Awards - On September 19, 2021, who won an Emmy Award for the 11th time, becoming the winningest Black artist in Emmy history? Answer: RuPaul
Teams have 5 minutes to submit their answer and wager. Teams can wager all the points they have earned up to that point but incorrect answers will lose the points wagered. At our weekly events, unless otherwise specified, the team in First Place after the final wins $15 dollars, Second Place wins $10, and then we reset the scores and do it again for a second hour with an all new set of questions!
